This was such a clear-headed, sympathetic take on the Gypsy-on-the-internet situation. I have really similar mixed feelings to you, and I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen more people talking about the moral/ethical/psychological implications of it all, as it's such a weird, macabre, glitzy chain of events - so I'm so glad you wrote it into the world! I was literally nodding my head when you called internet language in this circumstance "misguided." I've already been thinking a lot about how internetspeak shapes the way we think about the world, and how we interact with it, and you really put into words how this episode fits into that!

So brilliantly written, so well-informed, just great work. Gypsy's "digital homecoming" has been on my mind quite a bit too. It's making me think a lot about how removed we feel from people we talk about on the internet, which can compel us to say outlandish things about them/their circumstances that we wouldn't otherwise say in-person or to their face. It feels like the way we discuss celebrity/stanning/trauma online is shifting how we relate to one another offline too. I've been considering writing about that aspect of it. You knocked it out of the park with this, excited to read more from you <3

I’ve never heard the term ‘southern gothic imagery’ !! (Probs bc I am from the UK) but wow that feels incredibly apt. So thank you for introducing me to it! A well done essay - ever since she was released I think about Gypsy all the time. Your comments about all her trauma is just so unbelievably true - she’s never been able to live a normal existence. And with this new internet fame maybe she never will?! Anonymity is something she’ll never know and that’s so so hard. Truly being able to be anonymous today is a gift
